As Richard is here, there and everywhere, on the farm, at shows and soon to be spending a lot of time in his brand new development kitchen, we like to meet once a week so that he can keep me up to date with everything that’s happening on the farm – and here’s what’s been going on…
Our cows are milking beautifully; apparently some heifers are producing 35 to 40 litres a day – which should help us to make lots more delicious Cheddar. The grazing conditions are still good at the moment, and we were very grateful for the drop of rain – the ponds were looking very low and needed a good downpour (sorry!)
Asparagus from the garden has been brilliant, our spring crops have germinated well, but there has been some pigeon and rook damage to our pea plants. The hedgerows are looking lush and the woods are filled with bluebells – the wild garlic is at its peak too.
At Godminster the Farm is about much more than producing food. We like to actively encourage natural wildlife wherever possible and over recent weeks the swallows have been busily nesting and Richard saw his first swift of the season at the weekend. We also like to reintroduce native wildlife to the area and currently we are seeing 3 pairs of grey partridges. Also last week Richard reintroduced 16 breeding pairs of white doves to our dovecote on the Farm.
