Godminster’s Oak-Smoked Vintage Organic Cheddar has won Gold at the World Cheese Awards, held in Bergen, Norway on 2nd November.
A record-breaking 3,500 cheeses were entered across the categories of the world largest cheese-only competition, and Godminster’s Oak-Smoked Vintage Organic Cheddar triumphed in the popular Smoked Hard Cheese category.
Deborah Bradfield, Commercial Director, said of the win, “We’re hugely proud of our success at the World Cheese Awards, not only because it was a Gold award in a competitive category but also because we were able to showcase what we do on a truly global stage. The judges came from 29 different countries and for us, being able to come out on top in an international competition like this really is testament to the quality of our cheddar.”
This was the 31st World Cheese Awards and since its inception it has become a truly global cheese event, bringing together cheesemakers, retailers, buyers, consumers and food commentators from all around the world.
This year, the World Cheese Awards were held in Bergen, Norway, and formed part of a brand new festival, Matnasjonen Norge, with a view to promoting the best that Norway has to offer.
The West Country put up a great show across the event with cheeses from Somerset, Devon and Cornwall all taking home trophies, and in a wonderful fairytale ending, the ‘best in show’ was a Norwegian Fanaost, on their home turf. The cheesemakers Jorn & Ruth Hafslund, from Ostegården, have a lovely herd of just 12 cows. In this case, little really does go a long way!
Godminster Oak-Smoked Vintage Organic Cheddar is matured for up to 12 months. The cheese is naturally smoked over oak chippings which are sourced from sustainable woodlands. The cheddar has a rich depth of flavour and the smokiness is evenly balanced with the acidity of the cheddar. The texture is smooth and creamy with some salt crystals present. Our cheese is certified as organic by the Soil Association. It is suitable for vegetarians and contains no preservatives.
