The British Cheese Weekender (#BritishCheeseWeekender) is the perfect time for the team at Godminster to celebrate some of our favourite cheesemakers! The British cheese industry is fortunate to be full of passionate and talented cheesemakers, and the results are a delicious spectrum of amazing British cheese. The farmers and cheesemakers in our industry aren’t our competitors, they’re our friends and our daily inspiration. Here are some of our favourites!
FEN FARM’s BARON BIGOD and BUNGAY RAW BUTTER
Johnny and his team are the hard-working force behind Fen Farms Dairy, one of our favourite soft cheese producers. Their herd of Montbeliarde cattle graze the lush Suffolk countryside and produce the kind of protein-rich milk that is perfect for making their deliciously soft Baron Bigod and Bigod I Love You (their heart-shaped soft cheese).
We’re also delighted to stock their Bungay Raw Butter in the Godminster shop. This raw butter is the UK’s only raw farmhouse butter produced by using a lactic culture, making it a true specialist product and our favourite butter!
DORSET BLUE VINNY
A few miles over the Somerset-Dorset border is Sturminster Newton, home to Dorset Blue Vinny (and one of our favourite cheese shows). On Woodbridge Farm the Davies family create delicious blue cheese to their 300 year old recipe. It’s both creamy and crumbly, and recently took home a Gold at the World Cheese Awards.
No list would be complete without this icon of British cheesemaking, the Cornish Yarg. The smooth and nutty cheese from Lynher Dairies has been championing the best in modern British cheesemaking and rightly so. We loved it so much that we selected their mighty 3kg wheel to feature in our Wedding and Celebration Cheese Cake.
BATH SOFT CHEESE CO’s WYFE OF BATH and BATH SOFT CHEESE
One of our local heroes, the Bath Soft Cheese Co have been producing mouth-wateringly delicious organic cheese from Park Farm, near Bath, for years. Their wonderfully nutty Wyfe of Bath cheese was invented in 2000 and their iconic square-shaped Bath Soft Cheese is sold in our Godminster shop.
There are plenty of other amazing cheesemakers across the UK and the current COVID19 crisis has hit small independent specialists the hardest. Please support your amazing British cheesemakers during this difficult time by buying locally, buying independently, and buying British. Explore the makers taking part in the British Cheese Weekender, enjoy a plateful of British cheese this weekend and know that you’re doing your part to keep this amazing industry alive!
