Beetroot is one of our most successful crops, and last year we decided to turn it into a chutney to accompany our cheddar. Mixing it with apples from our orchards, we came up with a chunky beetroot and apple chutney – sweet to taste, not too vinegary, and with a deep purple colour, it complements the cheese perfectly. It was so popular we planted lots more and this year we found some local chutney makers, the Bay Tree Food company, to make it on our behalf. It comes in a reusable kilner jar and goes very well with smoked meats, baked potatoes and, of course, our vintage cheddar. As another seasonal product, it may not always be available.
